Trivia:  Patagonian Arara? Ever hear this name? It won't show up on any of the search engines.

 

 

The Patagonian conure has not always been known by this name. Originally this parrot was know as the Patagonian Arara. They were actually classed with the macaw, as a mini macaw, thought to be related to the macaw. The South American spanish (Argentina's dialect) translates the word "Arara" as meaning "Macaw".

Not until the 1900's were they classed with the conures. That is when they became the bird we all know of today. The picture below is a scan of an original antique drawing, dated 1834. This Patagonian Arara picture provided courtesy of Gail Gatewood.
